Nicole's Birthday!

Sorry for the long delay between posts.  We really have been quite busy creating new food and beer recipes but just haven't had the time to post them.  The Margeson & Reed law firm has really taken off since the new year and most evenings Matt's either meeting with clients or preparing for trials.  Nicole has been knee deep in beer related events from special tastings at breweries to release parties to contract brewing.  Just this week Nicole delivered her first batch of contract brewed amber ale!  A few friends have requested their own ales and next week Nicole will teach her first homebrewing "class".  It's very exciting to not only brew beer for others but to teach them to do it themselves.  The biggest recent event hands down was Nicole's birthday.  We went up to Fort Collins and met up with our friends Justie and Zach for one crazy day.  After 8 hours, 5 breweries, a few snacks, some souvenirs, and one dinner we had shown Fort Collins how to party and have the pictures to prove it...

The first stop was the Fort Collins Brewery for some Z Lager and Double Chocolate Stout.

The second brewery was Odell for some samplers, Imperial Stout (special edition small batch) and 5 Barrel poured from an old fashioned hand pulled British beer engine.  They tried to tempt us with their tour but unfortunately we were already running behind schedule at this point.

We made to New Belgium just in time for our tour.  Nicole was extremely excited to see the brewery and hear more of their story.  New Belgium is definitely a big inspiration for creating amazing beers in an employee owned, wind powered brewery.  What's not to love?  Everything about the brewery screamed fun and we were even able to taste a special ale on tap that was brewed in honor of Jeff's (the founder) trip to Belgium.  Perhaps the best part was taking the twirly slide (twice) down to the main floor and heading in for some free beers in the tasting room.  And make no mistake, their tasting room is larger than some breweries!  Next up we hit the Ram's Head, brewers of CB & Potts beers, and Coopersmith's brewpub before calling it a night.  One of the last pics of the night is a few of us with our tasting glasses and unhealthy obession with a bike mounted on the wall in such away that you could spin it.  It was probably for the best that we put the cameras away after the New Belgium stop!

Of course there had to be some cake, which quite fittingly was chocolate Guinness cake.

This is a Nigella Lawson recipe and we'll post it up here in the future for those of you wishing to make it yourselves.  Nigella was the first cook Matt and I would watch on TV together and her recipes are incredibly unique and very flavorful.  The chocolate Guinness cake is no exception and everyone is sure to look when you unveil this one!

Thats right the humble, yet awesome, Food Court was mentioned in an article called Blawg Reveiw #142. I guess we're moving on up in the world. Check out the article here (it'll open in a new window)

Also we're trying a new site Technorati Profile at this link for some help with search engine optimization so it'll be even easier for everyone to find The Food Court.  We're interested to see if folks can find us just by googling us.  So, let us know!

New Posts are Coming

Happy New Year!  We've been off doing the holiday thing but new recipes are coming soon.  We just purchased a brand new camera so photos will be standard part of every recipe.  We bottled the first batch of beer which came out excellent if I do say so myself.  The newest batch was just brewed on Sunday so watch for that too.  While on Christmas Matt was kept busy making mashed potatoes and offering advice on cooking crab legs and clarifying butter.  I drove a Mustang around and freaked out Matt.  I hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday season - Nicole

I would like to announce the launch of http://www.MargesonReed.com, the law firm's new website.  We've worked really hard to get this site up and running and I'd like to thank David Carson for all the great ideas and working with us over the holidays.  A special hello to little Joe Learman for teaching me more about how to be a lawyer (NO!  It's Mine!), and to the entire Learman and Babcock family for putting up with us over the holidays.  So to recap we've got a great mash potato recipe, a hollandaise sauce that goes great with everything, and a brand new beer recipe to post soon.  Hope everyone caught that awesome Michigan game, and managed to have a happy and safe holiday season - Matt

More pictures, and a big announcement!

Ok, now we're getting a bit picture happy.  For the past couple of recipes we have a bunch of photos of our recipe at various stages that for one reason or another we didn't actually use in the post.  As nice as it is to add it directly into the post, we also figured we'd better add them to the photo gallery.  So, check out all the new photos in the gallery and enjoy!

And now for the promised big announcement.  Nicole and I have started brewing our first batch of beer.  The whole process takes close to 4 weeks and we are entering week 3.  So look for this post to be broken up into small sections detailing all the steps, and of course there will be photos.  Also I'm getting together a section on brewing laws so look out for that.

Hey all,

First I'd like to say thanks to everyone for coming and reading this blog.  Nicole and I started it as just a fun project, but we find ourselves devoting more and more time to it each week.  All our new recipes will have photos to show you important steps and of course the finished project.

Anyhow I'd like to direct everyone to my business partner Jeremy Reed's new blog on men's rights issues.  This is something near and dear to our practice and his articles are very interesting.  So, check it out at http://mrmensrights.terapad.com

2 recipes again this week!

By Matt Margeson in General

Our original goal was to post one new recipe each week.  However, so many people have expressed interest in seeing more recipes that we're going to try and post some extras.  Last week we added on Nicole's hot cider recipe and this week it's her fall roasted vegetables, the first in a seasonal series of roasted veggies.  Hopefully this well help satiate your palate while we develop some more new dishes!

The Food Court launches

So a lawyer and an accountant walk into a kitchen… Oddly enough this lawyer and accountant happen to be married to one another and wanted to tell the world about their love for cooking and make a little bit of fun of the legal world while they’re at it.

Matt’s story:
My passion for cooking came about purely from necessity. With two working parents dinner was very often left up to the kids to cook. So purely out of a desire to not starve to death I began my cooking career. Along the way there were visits from the most influential cook in my life, my Great Grandma Angeline Biscotti. She would come down every year for my birthday, and though I didn’t have much interest in cooking at the time, I did love to hear all the great stories she had acquired in lifetime of living. Her homemade ravioli in meat sauce is still by far my favorite food of all time.
When I left for college at the University of Michigan, I left behind a growing interest in everything that is Italian cooking and, unfortunately, any hope of finding a sanitary kitchen… That is until senior year when I moved into an apartment. That’s when Sunday meals started, and I found a true passion for cooking for company.

Sunday meals
Sunday nights as a poor college student can be rough when it comes to food. Sick to death of pizza, beer, and steak fries that the weekends inevitably brought, everyone in the apartment was willing to chip in for a home cooked meal. I was more than happy to oblige heading to the nearest Whole Foods (on Washtenaw if you live in the Ann Arbor area) to grab some ingredients for a good meal. It was at this point that I realized I had a hit on my hands. Everyone would congregate in the kitchen and chat and relax as I cooked away. Soon it wasn’t just my apartment mates that were chipping in for dinner, but my fraternity brothers who lived in the apartment next door as well.
Even after we moved out and went our separate ways Sunday meals stuck around as I went through law school. With a fiancé, two cats, and all the homework and internship duties I could handle, Sunday meals became a way for me to relieve stress while doing something I truly came to love. So here at The Food Court I’m going to share my passion for the Sunday meal with as many people as care to read it.

Tying in my love of cooking with my other passion, the law, seemed like a great way for my new wife and I to spend some free time. So without further ado have some fun reading about a new and interesting area of the law, try the great recipes my wife and I are putting together, and most importantly let us know what you think!

Nicole’s story:
Most of my life it was just my mom and I, and before I can even remember I was in the kitchen with her. She is a really good cook and her baking is amazing. She said our baking skills come from my great-grandmother who used her hands instead of measuring utensils so sadly her recipes passed with her. One of my favorite pictures of me as a child is when I’m about four and we were making pies but, being a little kid, it was very important that I do it myself so my mom made the large pie and I made one in a little pot pie sized pan. In the picture I’m holding my little pie and have the most proud smile on my face. I’ve been cooking ever since then but didn’t really get into creating new recipes and trying new styles until college. Matt and I realized quickly that we were both pretty good at cooking and from there we quickly became infatuated with creating new dishes together. When we started watching the old Japanese Iron Chef episodes things exploded. Our friends and I would dig through the kitchen and find a secret ingredient to use for dinner. Matt would play the Iron chef leading the cooking, I would assist, and our roommate was the sous chef. Eric was the greatest sous chef ever. I’ve never seen any chef cut an onion into perfectly uniform pieces like he does. We created some really great dishes that year and we’ve kept it up since coming to Colorado. When Matt suggested we set up a cooking blog to share our recipes I couldn’t wait to get started. I’m really looking forward to sharing our love of cooking with everyone.
